With Surrey pop punk/rockers YOU ME AT SIX having just released hit-in-waiting single 'Underdog', what better time for frontman Josh Franceschi to talk Big Cheese through their new second album 'Hold Me Down', out now on Virgin, for an online exclusive.
The Consequence
"The reason I like this song is because it's the heaviest rock song on our album and I think it shows the development of our musicianship. The song itself is about a conversation I had with my mum about the worries and concerns I had for the band on this album. I did some 'self preservation' so to speak, so I managed to plant a seed of doubt in my mind, and my Mum is the only person who can make me re-think situations."
Underdog
"This is one of my favourite songs on the album, so I am especially happy that it ended up being a single. I think it's one of the catchiest songs on Hold Me Down and is such a short punchy song. I really value the meaning of some of the lyrics in this track, so much so that I decided to include my life motto in it, ' Down but not out'. "
Playing the Blame Game
"Obviously this song does not stem from any kind of 'Jazz' genre based roots, but this our 'jazziest' song! haha. I love the finger clicking in the verses and I think it shows a different side to our band. It also includes the album title 'HOLD ME DOWN' as a lyric, which I think gives it an extra purpose on the cd. "
Stay With Me
"Stay With Me shows a diverse side to our band. I really enjoy singing the chorus as I feel it has such a simple, yet powerful sentiment. Its almost a certainty that everyone has had their heart broken on some kind of level, so everyone can relate to it."
Safer to Hate Her
"Lyrically this song is about making mistakes and realising quickly after that it wasn't worth it. The song starts off really strongly which is one of its strong points. Perfect track 5 we say! "
Take Your Breath Away
"This was one of the first songs we wrote for HMD! We actually already recorded it in December 2008. I think that was when we knew our bands sound was developing and moving forward. This song also contains one of my favourite lyrics that I've ever written, 'I'm sweet so everybody takes a bite, dig in, I am the catalyst to your demise.' "
Liquid Confidence
" The perfect dirty pop song!! Haha. I remember writing this song in my room and thinking the guys would hate it. I was wrong! We were all in stitches when I was tracking the backing vocals for this song, in particular, the choir 'aasss' in the background for the verse. The chorus has a great sentiment though, 'you've got nothing to lose'."
Hard To Swallow
"This song wasn't originally going to be on the album! It only made it when we showed it to all the bands we were touring with in the states. They told us if we didn't put it on the CD, we'd kick ourselves. I am glad we did now, as it's definitely one of my favourites!!"
Contagious Chemistry
"The ironic thing about this song is that everyone thinks it's about a girl. ERRRGHHH nope. Its about my love/hate relationship with the industry I am in. Not the journalists, not even the publications, but the people that end up at the after shows who a few months previously didn't give a shit about your band, but are now all over you acting like you go way back, do one!"
There's No Such Thing as Accidental Infidelity
"This is my least favourite track on the album, but the rest of the band love it!!! Anyway, it's got a really funky vibe going along in the verse, we nicknamed this song Justin Timberlake in the studio, hmmm."
Trophy Eyes
"This song is all about the pit that's going to take place live during the middle 8! Bam! That really is it. This song, alongside THE CONSEQUENCE, is the 'heaviest' song on HMD. Distortion on the bass? Yup. Slapping deee basssss
Fireworks
"This song is the final song on the album. It's a total heartbreak song, what a soppy sally I am. Anyway, it was originally used as an interlude live, but we liked it so much, we transformed it into an actual jam! Result!"
